“Managing Organizations to Sustain Passion for Public Service

Businesses can make use of different types of tactics and incentives to attract talent. Government entities with average employee counts of close to 99,000 like Los Angeles County must do more than use tactics to attract and retain committed service-oriented employees. So, what motivates individuals to serve the public?

The Los Angeles County Management Council’s seminar, “Managing Organizations to Sustain Passion for Public Service,” is a collaboration with the American Society of Public Administration (ASPA) to virtually bring you James Perry who created the first survey instrument to measure public service motivation almost three decades ago. Perry will provide a systemic look across different streams of research and the applied questions that public organizations and their leaders confront, including: how to recruit ethical and committed staff; how to create work environments that support prosocial behavior, how to socialize employees for public service missions and many other areas. This seminar will give managers the tools to understand the motivations of individuals who choose careers in the government.

Speaker(s):

James Perry, Distinguished & Chancellor’s Professor Emeritus

Indiana University
